Ionization Potential

– Ionization potential (also known as ionization energy) is the minimum amount of energy needed to remove an electron from a neutral atom

X + Energy —-> X+ + e

X = any atom or molecule capable of being ionized

e = electron removed

– The closer the electrons are to the nucleus, the higher the ionization potential

– Units

(a) electron volt
(b) kilojoules per mole (KJ/mol) or kilocalories per mole (Kcal/mol)
